Virtual Talk with Victoria Wyeth
The Element of Surprise: Color in Andrew Wyeth’s Art
Monday, July 21 and Tuesday, July 22, 2025
(live program repeated on two evenings)
7 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) on Zoom
Join Victoria Wyeth as she shares her uniquely personal perspectives on the art of her grandfather, Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) and presents both familiar and never-before-seen work by the artist.
In July, Victoria will explore Andrew Wyeth’s use of color. Though some critics have commented on the artist’s palette as dull or mud-like, Wyeth frequently incorporated a variety of rich hues including blues, greens and even reds in both his watercolor and tempera paintings. In an interview with Thomas Hoving, Wyeth noted that he liked to be surprised when picking up a tube of watercolor paint: “It makes the process more exciting, frees it. When I squeeze, I get this revelation of the color that comes out. It’s accidental, but it’s an accident that I take advantage of. Sometimes you can express the color of something without using the obvious color.”
The program will be held on Zoom and participants are invited to ask questions. The presentation is the same on both evenings. Limited-time viewing of the recording will be available for those who miss the live event. Proceeds support the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art.
