In 2019, Governor Wolf declared the Eastern Hellbender (Cryptobranchus a. alleganiensis) Pennsylvania's State Amphibian. It is the largest salamander in North America, growing up to two FEET in length, inhabiting clean, oxygen-rich waterways. Despite its intimidating name and colorful nicknames like "Snot Otter," "Devil Dog," "Mud Devil," and "Lasagna Lizard," the hellbender is harmless to humans and most fish.
Join one of Western Pennsylvania's leading hellbender researchers, Eric Chapman, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's Director of Aquatic Science, to learn more about this species of concern!
