Owl Prowl at the Laurels Preserve

This event is no longer on sale.

Tuesday November 8

4:45 PM  –  6:15 PM

Join wildlife ecology graduate student Amanda Crandall on an Owl Prowl at the Laurels Preserve. We will meet at dusk to learn about, search for, and listen for local owl species, including Great Horned Owls, Barred Owls, Eastern Screech-Owls, and maybe even migrating Northern Saw-whet Owls.  All ages are welcome so long as participants feel comfortable with light hiking in the dark.

What to expect?

Participants will meet at the Laurels entrance parking lot for a brief introduction of how to identify the owl species we may see and learn some interesting owl facts (~15 minutes). They will then take a walk through the preserve as we listen and look for owls (~1 hour). The prowl will end back at the parking lot to go our separate ways. As an important note, finding owls requires good luck and owls may or may not be present!

About Amanda:

Amanda Crandall has a B.S. in biology with a concentration in ecology and environmental biology from James Madison University. She is currently pursuing a M.S. in wildlife ecology from the University of Delaware where she is using weather radar to study the relationship between land use change and climate change on migratory bird stopover. Amanda spent four years in the field assisting with avian research projects across the U.S. including migration banding, surveying, and tracking. She loves birds and sharing that love with other people!
