There are a multitude of fantastic native plants that can substitute the standard non-native vegetation often chosen for backyard aquatic gardens. This presentation will focus on the diversity of native plant options for maintained aquatic areas, along with the ecological structure and function of these gardens and ways to design and manage for a healthy aquatic vegetation community. We will discuss methods to phase out non-native plantings and highlight the beautiful native replacements that can support the surrounding ecology while also providing aesthetic and seasonal interest to aquatic gardens.

Katie Bartling grew up in Delaware, exploring the wetlands and waterways of the coastal plain. After college, she pursued a career in environmental consulting and developed skills in environmental field studies, GIS mapping and environmental visualization systems. The foundation of her work began as a 3D modeler for remedial design projects for contaminated sites impacting rivers, streams and other aquatic habitats. As a professional wetland scientist with a background in biological science, her expertise area expanded into wetland delineation, ecological field assessment, fisheries monitoring, and habitat surveys. In 2021, she completed a Masters in Landscape Architecture from Temple University and now contributes a design focus to aquatic restoration projects. Her work with the Penn State University Agriculture and Environment Center includes watershed-scale investigation to inform water quality improvement projects within the lower Susquehanna region of Pennsylvania.
