To conclude Penguin Court's winter virtual series, join us on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 from 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. for "Dark Skies are for the Birds," a presentation that will be led by Diane Turnshek, a lecturer in the Department of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University and adjunct faculty member in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh.
Light pollution disrupts bird behaviors, including migration, feeding and reproduction, by interfering with natural light cues. Artificial light at night disorients migratory birds and moves them towards cities, leading to building collisions and energy loss. Brightening nocturnal environments affects their feeding and mating patterns. Mitigating these effects requires bird-safe lighting, public awareness, and regulatory measures to protect avian species and maintain ecological balance.
This is a "Pay What You Wish" presentation with donations covering speaker fees and proceeds benefiting Penguin Court's education and outreach programs. Thank you for considering a donation.
Upon registration and again in a reminder email the day of the presentation, you will receive the Zoom link to join this program live. Approximately two weeks after the presentation, all registrants will receive a link to the recording to watch at their leisure.
