Creative Mending: The Art of the Patch

Creative Mending: The Art of the Patch

Sunday, April 19 from 1 – 3:30 pm

Join Philadelphia-based artist Julie Woodard to create a one-of-a-kind art patch that can later be used to mend or embellish a favorite garment.

A garment adorned with a handmade patch can tell a story, express your personality, and extend the life of items in your closet. In this art patch workshop, participants will build skills and confidence in hand stitching and appliqué—the technique of layering textiles to form images and patterns. In this art patch workshop, participants will build skills and confidence in hand stitching and appliqué—the technique of layering textiles to form images and patterns. Julie will introduce essential tools, demonstrate techniques, and share how textile repair and reuse play a role in her broader visual art practice.

All materials are included, however much of Julie’s textile work involves repurposing materials connected to personal histories, and attendees are welcome to bring textiles from home that hold significance for them. As we stitch, we’ll exchange stories and ideas, making the process as meaningful as the finished piece.

The program will begin with a short gallery discussion in the special exhibition, “Abundance/Excess: A Contemporary Eye on Still Life.” Your ticket includes museum admission for the day, and you are welcome to come early to explore the galleries, café, and gift shop before the workshop.
