By Design: Setting the Stage

Join us online for a conversation with Joshua Lane, the Lois F. and Henry S. McNeil Curator of Furniture at Winterthur Museum, Garden, & Library, about some of the furniture pieces in Betsy Wyeth’s collection.
The talk will center on Betsy’s keen eye for antique furniture alongside her historic vernacular architecture projects. A few of the pieces on display in the exhibition include her walnut highback chairs, line and berry spice cabinet, and mahogany two-corner cupboard, all from the 18th-19th centuries. Betsy favored rustic furniture with designs that offered simple, readable, graphic shapes and silhouettes, as viewed from across a room. This design process helped set the stage for some of Andrew’s future paintings.
